Led by Oneworld and the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), this project aimed to analyse the revitalization of former mining towns that had become economically stagnant due to the decline of coal mining. The goal was to explore alternative economic opportunities for these communities and to propose strategies for their rejuvenation. Funded by France, the project examined case studies and developed frameworks for diversifying local economies, creating new jobs, and fostering sustainable development. Completed in December 2022, the project provided key recommendations for the revitalization of mining ghost towns in South Africa.
