South African-German Energy Programme (SAGEN) (Germany)

The South African-German Energy Programme, implemented by GIZ and the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE), supports a wide range of South African partners in advancing the country’s transition to a reliable, affordable, and clean energy future. Funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and co-funded by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), the programme provides advisory services to liberalise the electricity industry and update policies and regulations, fostering a dynamic and competitive energy market. It assists public institutions and municipal distributors with advanced planning and operational strategies to enhance system resilience and optimise power delivery. Furthermore, it collaborates with municipalities to integrate embedded generation solutions into distribution networks, thereby enhancing grid stability and resilience. It also supports local municipalities in implementing effective energy management systems and driving improvements in energy efficiency. The Capacities for the Energy Transition Project under SAGEN empowers decision-makers and professionals in public organisations and local government, enhancing their competences for prompt, informed decisions and implementation, bolstering contributions to the power sector reform. Tailored services include expert talks, peer exchanges, training programmes, collaborations with educational institutions, and targeted capacity building formats. In addition, SAGEN supports its partners with implementing gender-responsive measures, including capacity building for women, fostering equitable work conditions to promote female leadership and decision-making roles.
